How to dispute credit report errors

Step-by-step guide to correcting errors in your credit report: what counts as an error, documents needed, RBI timelines and compensation.

5 min read · Reviewed 1 November 2026

What counts as an error

  • An account that does not belong to you
  • A closed loan still shown as active or with a balance
  • Payments marked late that were made on time
  • Duplicate accounts
  • Wrong personal details (name, date of birth, PAN, address)

The process

  • Download your report from the bureau’s official website
  • Collect proof: NOC, closure letter, bank statements, payment receipts
  • Raise an online dispute with the bureau, choosing the specific entry
  • The bureau checks with the lender; the lender must respond
  • Track the status using your dispute ID

RBI timelines and compensation

Under RBI’s compensation framework, a lender must send corrected information to the bureau within 21 calendar days of being informed, and a complaint should be resolved within 30 calendar days. If not, the complainant is entitled to compensation of ₹100 per calendar day of delay. If a complaint is rejected, you must be told the reason.

If it is still unresolved

You can escalate to the lender’s grievance redressal officer and, if needed, to the RBI Integrated Ombudsman via the RBI complaint management system.

Remember

Raising a dispute with a bureau is free. Only genuinely inaccurate information can be corrected.
