How to improve your credit score

Practical, honest steps to improve your CIBIL score: fix errors, pay on time, lower utilisation, limit applications, and deal with settled accounts.

Nine steps that help

  • Dispute genuine errors with the bureau and lender, with documents
  • Clear any current overdue amounts first; they hurt the most
  • Set up auto-debit or reminders so every EMI and card bill is paid on time
  • Keep card utilisation low (many experts suggest under 30% of the limit)
  • Pay the full card statement balance, not just the minimum due
  • Avoid applying for several loans or cards in a short period
  • Keep older, well-managed credit cards open to preserve history length
  • For settled accounts, ask the lender whether paying the remaining dues can update the status to "closed"
  • Review guarantor and co-applicant loans, since their defaults affect you

How long it takes

Error corrections follow RBI timelines (complaints should be resolved within 30 days). Building new positive history typically takes several months of consistent behaviour. Serious negatives fade in impact over time as newer, positive data accumulates.

Be wary of shortcuts

No agency can delete accurate negative information or "buy" you a score. Be cautious of anyone guaranteeing a specific score, asking for your bank passwords or OTPs, or charging only to download a report you can get free.
