Why it matters most

Past repayment behaviour is the best predictor lenders have of future behaviour. That is why repayment history is generally considered the largest single factor in your score.

How late payments are recorded

Lenders report how many days past due (DPD) each account is. A payment a few days late may still be reported; 30, 60 and 90+ DPD are progressively more serious. 90+ DPD can lead to the account being classified as a non-performing asset.

Recovering from missed payments

  • Pay overdue amounts as soon as possible to stop DPD increasing
  • Talk to your lender early if you are struggling; ask about restructuring options
  • Automate future payments
  • Give it time: recent on-time months gradually outweigh older delays
